A varrying route which will show you the area on both sides of the Rio Zêzere to the south of Ferreira do Zêzere.
Ferreira do Zêzere - Castelo do Bode - Constância - Abrantes - Vila de Rei - Ferreira do Zêzere
Leaving Ferreira do Zêzere you go via the EN110 in direction Tomar. After ± 10 km you go to the right and follows the route via the renewed IC3 in direction Entroncamento/Lisboa. At the end of the highway you reach a roundabout where you go to the left, direction Barragem Castelo do Bode. You keep following this road untill the dam.
The lake of Castelo do Bode is one of the biggest of Portugal: it stretches itself out along about 60 km. This giant mass of water is mostly used to provide more than 3 million people with drinking water, especially in Lisbon. It's inicial function, though, was producing electricity. The dam was built in 1951, as first in a row of dams built in the fifties. After this one, the dams of Cabril (1954) and Bouçã (1955) have been constructed.
You cross the dam and continue driving in the direction of Constância. Here, the Rio Zêzere assumes a completely different character from the river on the north of the dam. Reaching Constância, you go to the left in direction of Abrantes.
Constância is small village with a particular position: the who most important rivers of Portugal, the Tejo (Tagus) and the Zêzere cross and continue together their way to Lisobn.
A few kilometers after Constância you reach a roundabout where you follow the N3 in direction of Montalvo. You keep following the N3 via Amoreira, Rio de Moinhos and Abrançalha, in direction of Abrantes. You are crossing the highway A23 a couple of times.
In Abrantes you go straight forward at the first roundabout, (or go to the right if you want to visit Abrantes).
You keep following this road in the direction of Alferrarede. Just after a second roundabout you go to the left in direction of Carvalhal and Sentieiras; then you have already passed the Lidl (on your right) and the Modelo (on your left). You follow this road straight out (a part of it is a one direction, and while arranging this route this road was in a very bad condition). You pass the A23 via a tunnel and follows the road (the N2) till the little village Sentieiras. At the beginning of this village you go down to the right. This road brings you, across a small bridge, in direction of Sardoal. At a T-junction you follow direction Sardoal, after which you go the left at the end of the road.
At the roundabout you go left, in direction of Andreus/Carvalhal/Tomar. At the next crossing you go straight ahead in direction of Andreus. In the village Andreus you drive, again, straight forward, now in direction of São Domingos/Vila de Rei.
Attention: after ± 3 km you go to the left, following the road in direction of São Domingos/Vila de Rei. You are now driving in the area where has been on of the biggest forest-fires in Portugal during the summer of 2003. On one side, the damaging results of the fire and the desolate character of the landscape hit and move the spectator. On the other side, the same landscape and the relatively fast recovery of nature also impress. In São Domingos you follow your way in direction of Vila de Rei (straight forward).
At the kilometer indicator 371 you go the the left in direction of Macieira/Cercadas/Aveleira. At the first junction you go to the right in direction of Brejo Fundeiro/Macieira. You follow this road untill Cercadas. After this village you keep in the direction of Vila de Rei. You then reach the N348. Turning right, you go Vila de Rei, turning left you go back to Ferreira do Zêzere.
You keep following the N348 and after passing the Zêzere you approach Ferreira do Zêzere.
